Abstract
Geoscience writing, as an important part of scientific writing, is of great value to cultivate students’scientific
literacy. This study conducts a statistical analysis of the geoscience writing in the American high school textbook“Earth
Science Geology, Environment and Universe (Second Edition 2023 Revision)”, and fi nds that it has the characteristics of
strengthening scientifi c literacy orientation, attaching importance to task progression design, paying attention to professional
role substitution, integrating social science issues, carrying out project-based learning, and paying attention to the use of
geoscience tools. Based on this, the following enlightenment is provided to geography textbook editors and geography teachers
respectively : geography textbook editors should clarify the logic of scientifi c writing design, promote the development of
students' thinking, set up“scientifi c writing”columns, design various types of tasks, and clarify the direction of scientifi c
writing tasks, provide writing instructions; teachers should change the concept of writing teaching, clarify the orientation of
writing evaluation, transform rich social resources into writing resources, create writing situations containing professional
role information, pay attention to task-driven design, cultivate students' higher-order thinking, and guide students to express
creatively in writing.
